2008 seems to be a bad year....

March 10th, 2008 at 10:41 am

So far 2008 has been throwing sh*t at us and most of it is sticking(excuse my language).

If I read around the blogs I get the general feeling this year hasn't started out very good for many people. Please feel free to leave your comment at the bottom of this post to let me know how your 2008 is going so far, because misery loves company...

Last year, Murphy and some of his brother decided to stay with my family, and 2008 is kind of the result. All in all, I have big plans for this year. I have paid off about 16% of my consumer debt. I have plans to bring that down to zero this year. I also plan on saving $15,500 in my 401(k) by year end and I’m 24% there. I also plan on saving an additional $10,000 by year end.

I’m looking at this year to really solidify my finances.

Have I had my set backs? Yes. Right now, I am in a little cash flow crunch. I may need to tighten the belt a little to get back on point, but I am still hopeful I’ll be on target when I close the books this month.

I hope 2008 gets better for you. If your goals for 2008 are too large, try to break them down into smaller goals. I took my entire consumer debt of $49k and broke it down into piece. For instance, I started with $6k in credit card debt. I had a goal to pay it off by May 1st. I am looking at paying that off by the end of this month. Then I’ll focus on the next debt and get it paid off. Paying off 6K is a lot easier then 49K.

So, rework the plan, reevaluate your goals, and get at them. The year is not even a quarter over.

As I stated in another post, I think that we have all had alot of bad news from the start of the year here in US. We've had the dollar weakening, higher gas prices higher food costs, higher health insurance premiums, fed lowering rates that have affected many savers bottom line. We've also seen a bad flu season, extremely cold weather, stock market troubles, job worries with downsizing, etc. So it's no wonder a lot feel uneasy. I just start turning off the TV when I've had enough. Our 24-7 news does more harm in reporting bad news over and over and over. I personally think that they have talked down the economy so much that many people have become pessimistic more than usual.

But, - we also have to look at what we have more than what we don't have. That's the balance.

2008 for me is eh. This and that. I had a big tax bill but it meant I had a made fair amount of interest and dividends from the inheritance. And right now the only people in my family left alive are my sister and I ... so no deaths probably for awhile.

Sit tight, protect yourself and wait out the storm. If you still have a job, a recession's a good time to save. Fewer spending temptations.

Not going bad for me right now. I recently graduated college, and found a good career as a Financial Analyst. The hard part is going to be saving up money, since the student loans start kicking in soon!
